Lebanon Valley Cycles 2015 Sponsor Benjamin Risser
BenjaminRisser was born August 15, 1987 3 months premature. He spent his first 3 months in the NICU at Hershey Medical Center. Ben had numerous complications and even acquired meningitis at the hospital. His mother noticed that he wasn’t hitting his developmental milestones. Even though all babies develop differently, Ben’s issues didn’t go away. At 9 months, his mother brought him back to the doctor’s and he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture caused by an insult to the developing brain. As part of his cerebral palsy diagnosis, Ben has spastic quadriplegia and cannot walk but has some use of his arms. His limbs are extremely stiff and he is wheelchair-dependent.
Quadriplegia refers to a type of spastic cerebral palsy in which all four limbs are affected. Like other types of spastic cerebral palsy, quadriplegia is marked by stiff or permanently contracted muscles. However, the severity of the condition will vary from child to child. Those with moderate spastic quadriplegia may be able to sit by themselves, walk short distances and perform similar tasks, while those with more severe cases tend to have great difficulty with the various aspects of day-to-day life.
Ben has had heart surgery, multiple shunts replaced, seizures and multiple orthopedic surgeries.
Ben graduated High School from Northern Lebanon High School in 2007. Ben lives with his parents and brother in Lebanon, PA. He is a member of Messiah Lutheran Church of Lebanon.Despite the challenges Ben endures, he is a happy young man who loves to go out to eat, loves people and loves to go swimming in the summer to get exercise. He has volunteered at numerous locations, currently he is volunteering at Stone Ridge Towne Center and Poplar Run Buildings. He loves to volunteer; he goes five times a week.
